In 2008 Barbara completed her MA studies in English literature and linguistics at the University of Vienna; during her studies she focussed primarily on adult education and English for Specific Purposes (ESP). In her MA thesis she conducted an evaluation study of a bilingual programme at secondary schools commissioned by the Vienna Board of Education (Stadtschulrat). Barbara joined the Institute for English Business Communication in 2009 as a Research and Teaching Assistant and started her doctoral studies. In her PhD thesis she investigated English-taught degree programmes at business and economics universities. Amongst other things, she conducted a case study at WU, in which she investigated the programme design of English-taught master’s programmes. After becoming a Senior Lecturer in 2013, she helped with the restructuring of EBC 1 and the transitioning of the course from LVP to the current PI format. She coordinates the EBC 1 programme and is also responsible for the EBC 1 tutorial. She teaches EBC 1, EBC 2 and, at the Institute for Business Education, the elective course “English as a Teaching Language”. Barbara is also an academic advisor for WU’s partner universities in Lisbon and interviews students who want to spend an exchange semester there.
Barbara’s research interests focus on tertiary education, i.e. teaching and learning at universities. This comprises higher education didactics, as well as the fields of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and EMI (English-medium Instruction). She is also interested in developments and processes related to the Internationalisation of Higher Education.
