Thomas, Ryah, DPhil

Ryah is a historical social scientist working on socioeconomic enfranchisement and mobility in the long run. She is Assistant Professor at the Institute for Political Economy of Public Policy at WU. She completed her DPhil in Economic and Social History at the University of Oxford as a Clarendon Scholar, and previously worked as a research assistant at the Oxford Martin School/Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET).

Her research develops new methods for analysing population-level social mobility using intergenerational lifecourse evidence reconstructed from full-count historical census data. Empirically, her work focuses on 19th/20th century England, with particular attention to gendered and immigrant outcomes. Current projects extend to questions of makeshifts and precarity, tied housing, and breadwinning since the nineteenth century, alongside a broader interest in building historical microdata to inform debates on just transitions and resilience.

Inquiries for supervision of BA and master’s theses in the following areas are especially welcome:
Topics such as: Social mobility & socioeconomic inequalities, precarious work, gender, migration, housing & households, social capital & networks
