An Optimization Approach to Limit Urban Sprawl

The unprecedented population growth Vienna is experiencing puts the city at serious risk of urban sprawl, with detrimental effects on the quality of life. In this project, we study the potential of a discrete optimization approach based on operations research to limit sprawl. We propose a novel optimization framework aimed at performing optimal land use decisions that minimize urban sprawl while meeting inhabitants' demands for services and housing. It is based on the discretization of the city as a raster of cells, and we employ mixed integer linear programming as a modeling approach. The project is conducted in collaboration with Prof. Jochen A. G. Jaeger (Concordia University), a leading expert on urban sprawl. Effectively containing urban sprawl will help Vienna remain a livable and attractive city in the coming decades.
