In February 2026, the University of Naples “Federico II” hosted an international conference on integrating sustainable development in the EU’s external relations. Stefan Mayr contributed to the programme with his work at the intersection of EU investment law, EU law, and sustainable development. His intervention examined the EU’s increasing practice of including sustainable development provisions in its investment agreements. He highlighted the resulting substantive tensions, as well as challenges relating to the enforcement and effectiveness of such provisions. At the same time, he explored possible avenues for strengthening the contribution of investment agreements to the EU’s constitutional objective of achieving sustainable development.
