Thomas Grisold is Full Professor of Information Systems and Applied AI at WU-Vienna.

His research explores the organizational, managerial, and societal implications of artificial intelligence. He is particularly interested in how AI systems are embedded in organizational life and how they transform work practices, decision-making, and knowledge generation. More broadly, he examines how advanced digital technologies—such as AI, IoT, and process mining—impact organizing processes across various contexts. Thomas’ work integrates computationally intensive approaches with traditional qualitative methods, particularly focusing on digital trace data-based theorizing.

His research has been published or is forthcoming in leading academic and practitioner-oriented outlets, including Management Information Systems Quarterly, The Journal of Information Technology, Harvard Business Review, and The Journal of Strategic Information Systems, among others. He teaches courses on AI, business process management, digital innovation, and computational theorizing across undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate programs.

Prior to joining WU Vienna, Thomas held academic positions at the University of St. Gallen and the University of Liechtenstein. He earned his PhD in Social and Economic Sciences from WU Vienna. He has been a visiting researcher at the University of Notre Dame (USA), Queensland University of Technology (Australia), the Weizenbaum Institute (Germany), Lancaster University (UK), and the University of Palermo (Italy).

Thomas has received several honors for his research and academic service, including the Next Generation Researcher Award from the Principality of Liechtenstein.
