“Linguistic diversity in professional settings: Needs, policies and practices”

The conference is organized by our Associated Member Johannes Schnitzer (Head of the Institute for Romance Languages) and will take place at WU Vienna on May 2-3, 2024.

Two further Associated Members of the Competence Center for EM&CEE will participate in the conference. Marie-Therese Claes (Head of the Institute for Gender and Diversity in Organizations) will address the role of English as a lingua franca in today's corporate world.
The contribution by František Tůma (Deputy Head of the Institute Slavic Languages) will deal with aspects of the multilingual workplace communication.

At the two-day conference, there will be several contributions dealing with the topics of Emerging Markets and CEE. We present you a small selection:

·      Managing multilingualism at the workplace: language policies of Itaipu hydroelectric powerplant in Brazil and Paraguay
·      How highly qualified EU-migrants from CEE countries experience the importance of language(s) in professional settings in Vienna
·      Navigating linguistic diversity in professional settings: insights from Bangladesh
·      Language and communication in old-age care settings: Perspectives of migrant care workers from Ukraine
·      Multilingual language policies in institutions of higher learning: Wits University in South Africa
·      Challenges and opportunities in the communication of Community-Based Tourism in the Dominican Republic
