Inhalte der LV:

The main focus on the course will squarely be placed on contemporary issues affecting Britain, the U.S., and possibly the rest of the world. Topics include subjects such as major economic & business developments, cultural characteristics, food & drink, leisure activities, language, and the social framework of the two countries. Throughout the course, contrasts and parallels between Austria, Britain, and the United States will be discussed in some detail.

Lernergebnisse (Learning Outcomes):

After attending the course, students will be able to follow and better understand current developments in Britain and the U.S. in fields such as business, politics, sports and culture. By being exposed to media input (mostly) from those two countries, a general understanding of basic behavioral and cultural idiosyncrasies will be developed and fostered.

Regelung zur Anwesenheit:

In line with WU regulations for PI-type classes. Mandatory attendance with a maximum of 20% of class time that can be missed; however, missing class time will result in potential loss of participation and/or in-class assignment points for the sessions in question.

Lehr-/Lerndesign:

Team teaching by two lecturers with complementary skill sets with ongoing input from varied sources (media, possible guest speakers, etc.). Students are encouraged to follow developments in Britain and the U.S. throughout the semester and develop a critical perspective of the subject matter discussed.

Leistung(en) für eine Beurteilung:

Regular in-class assignments: 40% total

Course design exercise: 20%

Ongoing participation: 10%

Final assignment: 30%

Content and clarity as well as appropriate language use will form the basis of assessment.

Teilnahmevoraussetzung(en):

English competence of at least B2 under CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is assumed.
