Inhalte der LV:

German 101, a first semester German course, introduces Illinois in Vienna Programs students to the language and culture of the modern German-speaking world with a special focus on Austria. Every effort is made to present opportunities to use the language not only in the classroom, but in their daily lives in Vienna, Austria, and Europe. To this aim, each lesson centers on linguistic, communicative, and cultural goals that also serve as a type of “survival guide” for their study abroad experience.

Lernergebnisse (Learning Outcomes):

The students will

  • learn to use basic German language forms, i.e., grammar and vocabulary, in meaningful contexts across both spoken and written genres.
  • develop the ability to interpret (not merely read or listen), communicate (not merely give and receive information), and perform (not merely write or speak) in German.
  • become literate users of the German language.
  • get prepared for the A1 examination of the Österreichisches Sprachdiplom (ÖSD).

Regelung zur Anwesenheit:

As attendance is mandatory, it does not count towards the participation grade. Always inform your instructor of your absence. Please be aware that compensation tasks for any absence are necessary to keep up with the course and be prepared for the next class. You are allowed to miss up to 4 hours total. For any missed absence after those 4 missed hours, students are required to provide official documentation of their absence such as a doctor’s note. Speak with your instructor if you experience an emergency situation or have extenuating circumstances. Only in very rare instances will your instructor grant exceptions. Beginning with the 5th missed hour, your course average will drop dramatically (a 1% deduction off of your final grade per missed day). Due to this possible impact on your grade, your final grade in the Canvas gradebook might not correspond with your overall final grade.

The German 101 excursions and their accompanying assignments are mandatory. Please see the schedule for the dates.

Lehr-/Lerndesign:

The communicative approach that we take in this course focuses on learning to use basic German language forms, i.e., grammar and vocabulary, in meaningful contexts across both spoken and written genres.
