Inhalte der LV:

Austrian-related topics will be used in this course to expand students’ speaking and writing skills. For this purpose, shorter literary texts and current articles from the daily and weekly press are used. The authentic text material should serve both as a basis for discussions in class and as an opportunity to write when working at home. In addition, audio texts and film excerpts are used as stimulating media and important grammar topics are worked out, which should contribute to the linguistic success of the students.

Lernergebnisse (Learning Outcomes):

Students will

  • develop greater ease and more sophistication in their oral and written expression in German.
  • be able to engage with a broad range of current conversational topics and write with greater complexity, fluency, accuracy, and ease.
  • will learn about Austria-related topics, which will help them to expand their perspectives of both German culture and language.
  • expand their knowledge of German grammar and vocabulary.
Regelung zur Anwesenheit:

As attendance is mandatory, it does not count towards the participation grade. Always inform your instructor of your absence. Please be aware that compensation tasks for any absence are necessary to keep up with the course and be prepared for the next class. You are allowed to miss up to 3 hours total (2 sessions). Beyond that, students are required to provide official documentation of their absence such as a doctor’s note. Speak with your instructor if you experience an emergency situation or have extenuating circumstances. Only in very rare instances will your instructor grant exceptions. Beginning with the 4th missed hour, your course average will drop dramatically (a 1% deduction off of your final grade per missed day). Due to this possible impact on your grade, your final grade in the Canvas gradebook might not correspond with your overall final grade.

The Sprachkurs excursions and their accompanying assignments are mandatory (exceptions may apply). The number of excursions (usually 3-5) varies each semester depending on current events and interests. The dates will be announced in class and may be outside of regular class times due to their nature such as going to the theater to see a play, or a workshop or tour where only certain times are available. Additionally, students are expected to visit the Stammtisch to practice their speaking skills with Austrian students.
