The course will cover the following topics:

  • Changing focus topics for research projects in the broad field of IS Management and Control
  • The design of a research plan for conducting a research project independently
  • Criteria for developing research project proposals
  • Criteria for delivering research projects successfully
  • Literature reviews
  • Research methods
  • Epistemological and methodological viewpoints 
Lernergebnisse (Learning Outcomes):
By the end of this course students should be able to:
  • Understand the general requirements for research projects in IS Management and Control
  • Understand the usual steps and parameters of a literature search and what a good literature review needs to include
  • Conduct a systematic literature search to show the state-of-the art in the context of the given research aim
  • Select and apply the appropriate methodology to a research problem independently
  • Write-up a short seminar paper according to the requirements of academic writing in the field of IS Management and Control
  • Select the most important findings to be professionally presented in a concise manner.
  • Apply a range of transferable skills such as literature search, analytical skills, application of theory to real life situations, teamwork, presentation, motivation and interpersonal skills.

Regelung zur Anwesenheit:

This course requires mandatory attendance for all synchronous units, which comprise the first unit and the presentation day. Parts of the presentation day can be excused upon request, if students have concurrent obligations.

Students need to declare reasons for non-attendance and may need to compensate for any approved absences.

Further units are likely to be scheduled during course delivery and depend on the needs of students.

Lehr-/Lerndesign:

The course will be conducted in block mode.

Individual interactions with the supervisors are a planned component of this course, which are most important during the first stage of this course to develop an individual research proposal (Task 1). This stage is offered through guided self-learning with specified objectives.

This course involves private study including guided reading associated with focus topics, independent work, and preparation for and production of a research assignment based on the research proposal. Students receive a large amount of freedom in selecting the most suitable topic for this assignment.

Leistung(en) für eine Beurteilung:

Formative assessment will take place during each session when students can raise questions, discuss topics and present findings. Formal grading of work and learning outcome will include the quality of the research presentation (30%), the final research paper (60%), and participation in discussions and activities (10%).
