The "Analyzing Transformative Industry Challenges" course provides students with a unique chance to collaboratively explore a specific industry in cooperation with a business partner. The main goal of this course is to enable students to gain a comprehensive understanding of specific industry challenges, allowing them to analyze risks and identify potential opportunities in teams based on accounting and market data. A key aspect of the course involves examining business challenges that arise from the sustainability transformation and the dynamic economic landscape in which the industry operates. Through a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, students will create a holistic overview of the current and future drivers shaping the industry.

 

This course is offered in collaboration with the WU Trading and Investment Society (www.wutis.at), a student-led finance society deeply engaged in relevant subjects, and business partners, possessing a deep understanding of each semester's industry topic, thereby reinforcing the course's practical relevance.

Lernergebnisse (Learning Outcomes):

Upon successful completion of this course, students are expected to achieve the following learning outcomes:

1. Profound understanding of industries: Attain a comprehensive understanding of various industries and their fundamental drivers, encompassing economic, sustainability factors.

2. Analysis of current industry challenges: Develop insights into how companies can effectively navigate challenges and mitigate risks while also capitalizing on opportunities presented by the industry's changing landscape, including understanding and adapting to evolving regulatory frameworks.

3. Practical and team-oriented skills: Enhance practical skills through hands-on experience, encouraging effective teamwork, and fostering productive collaboration.

4. Data Awareness: Gain an understanding of different types of data sources (accounting and market data) used in the industry and consulting business and develop the ability to critically assess their relevance and validity. Learn to select and utilize appropriate datasets for specific questions or challenges.

5. Data Interpretation and Analysis: Develop competencies in quantitative analysis, learning to draw meaningful insights from diverse datasets using tools such as Excel or Power.BI and programming languages like "R" or “Python”.

6. Structured presentation abilities: Crafting structured, compelling presentations on complex industry topics, enhancing the ability to clearly and persuasively communicate findings and insights to a professional audience.

Regelung zur Anwesenheit:

The successful completion of this course requires mandatory attendance on two essential dates:

1. In-Person Kickoff meeting: Students will be introduced to the project's scope and will receive a comprehensive overview of the expectations concerning the project's outcomes.

2. In-Person Final presentation: Students will deliver an end-of-semester group presentation, presenting their findings and insights from the project.

Optional dates will include feedback sessions, offering students opportunities to receive constructive feedback on their project's progress.

Leistung(en) für eine Beurteilung:

Assessment of students' performance will be based on the following criteria:

1. Participation in the kickoff meeting (20 %): Active engagement in the introductory meeting will be considered in the assessment process.

2. Presentation (40%): Students will be evaluated on the clarity, structure, and persuasiveness of their presentations.

3. Analysis (40%): The proficiency demonstrated in applying a diverse set of quantitative methods to analyze relevant industry-related datasets will be assessed.
