Inhalte der LV:

Introduction to the role of technological progress in economics by means of the standard frameworks (Solow model, endogenous growth model). Application of these models to answer how automation and digitalization affect economic growth, income inequality, and the distribution of wealth.

In the second part of the course, selected chapter of the book “The Economics of Artificial Intelligence” are discussed to answer questions such as how economic policy can react to the challenges of a digital economy.

Lernergebnisse (Learning Outcomes):

After finishing the course, students will be able to

  • Analyze the implications of technological progress for economic growth
  • Analyze the effects of automation and digitalization on income inequality, the distribution of wealth, and economic growth.
  • Discuss the implications of the digital economy on economic policy
Regelung zur Anwesenheit:
  • Since personal interaction is important in this course, attendance and active participation are necessary. Thus, attendance is compulsory for at least (80%) of the sessions. More than 20% of sessions missed lead to being unregistered from the course.
  • If you will miss a session because of illness or quarantine, please send me an email before the session starts and include a confirmation (medical statement, quarantine statement, etc.). This will then not count as a missed unit.
Lehr-/Lerndesign:

The course is composed of two parts. The first part is a set of lectures on the economic effects of automation and digitalization. This is followed by a seminar part in which students prepare and present a term paper. There will be a final exam accounting for 45% of the grade, the presentation will account for another 45% of the grade, and the moderating the discussion of another presentation will account for 10% of the grade.

Leistung(en) für eine Beurteilung:

Final exam (45% of the grade), presentation (45% of the grade), moderating the discussion following another presentation (10% of the grade).
