WU is the best Austrian university in the current WirtschaftsWoche economics ranking

15/12/2023

Every two years, the KOF Swiss Economic Institute at ETH Zurich conducts a major economics survey on behalf of the German WirtschaftsWoche magazine (Handelsblatt media Group), which is published at the end of the year. In this ranking of the 25 strongest research universities in the field of economics in the German-speaking countries, WU (Vienna University of Economics and Business) comes in at ninth place this year, as Austria’s highest-ranked university.

With a total of 88 publishing authors, WU has a very strong research faculty in economics, not only with regard to senior faculty but, above all, also junior researchers. The University of Zurich takes the top spot in the ranking this year, followed by LMU Munich at second place.

Excellent results for WU in economics and business administration

According to the WirtschaftsWoche magazine, the economics rankings are based on all relevant publications by economists over the past 10 years, covering almost 1,800 economics journals.

In alternating years, the WirtschaftsWoche magazine also publishes a ranking of the universities with the strongest research output in business administration, which is also issued on a biannual basis. At the end of 2022, WU achieved an excellent third place in the business administration ranking, bested only by the University of St. Gallen and the Technical University of Munich.
