Presentation of a WU Honorary Doctorate

Frederick Schauer is a David and Mary Harrison Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Virginia. From 1990 to 2008 he was Frank Stanton Professor of the First Amendment at Harvard University. He held various distinguished visiting appointments, among others at University of Chicago School of Law, Columbia Law School or as Eastman Professor and fellow of Balliol College at the University of Oxford. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, Schauer’s work has decisively influenced contemporary scholarship on freedom of expression, and legal and constitutional theory. In awarding an honorary doctorate to Frederick Schauer, WU celebrates the achievements of a scholar who, like only a few others, has shaped the legal discourse of our time.
