... in Vietnam, Hanoi (Joint ISU)

Through a Joint ISU offered by WU, Lisa-Marie Enzminger spent several weeks in Vietnam. Now, she tells us about her experiences and impressions from this faraway Southeast Asian country.
How did you learn about the Joint ISU program? Why did you decide to join?
I learned about the Joint ISU Program through a good friend of mine. Then, I informed myself about the ISUs offered on the website. Personally, I was attracted to the ISU programs mainly because of the different destinations offered. I have always wanted to travel to Southeast Asia and when I discovered that an ISU was taking place in Vietnam, I instantly knew that I wanted to apply.
How has the Joint ISU experience helped you personally and academically?
The ISU program definitely helped me to speed up my studies. Since I work part-time and also do a second degree at the University of Vienna, I often did not complete as many courses during the semester as I would have liked. The ISU was an excellent compensation for me, as I was able to obtain 8 ECTS within three weeks during the summer holidays.
I also enjoyed the academic program very much. Although I had learned about emerging markets such as Vietnam at WU before, it was a unique experience to work on such a case study kind of “on-site”. In addition, we worked together with Vietnamese students on the project, which certainly enhanced my intercultural skills.
In your opinion, what distinguishes a Joint ISU from a semester abroad?
I know that many WU students fulfill their IBWL international experience by participating in Joint ISU programs. I myself did not want to miss the chance to spend a semester abroad (I spent the summer semester 2019 in Paris). Therefore, I did the ISU Vietnam as an "extra" so to speak.
I think the advantage of the ISUs is that you have the chance to travel to several countries and to experience shorter but at the same time several international experiences during your studies. Personally, I am glad to have spent a semester abroad as well as participated in an ISU program. I can only recommend to everyone to gain as much international experience as possible.
What would you have liked to know before your application?
One should not underestimate that the Joint ISUs include an intensive program. Apart from the academic program, you will of course want to explore the city, spend time with your new friends and maybe go on a weekend excursion or two. Since you have a big group project to finish besides all the "leisure stress", you might want to prepare yourself for a little less sleep ;)
How would you describe the best moment of your ISU?
I have experienced so many beautiful moments during ISU Vietnam. Especially I really liked the city of Hanoi and I actually managed to settle in very quickly. When you first arrive in Hanoi and you have never been to a comparable city before, you are probably a bit shocked initially. The streets are full of people, mopeds, and other vehicles and first, you experience everything as insanely loud and confusing. However, already after the first few days, I felt super comfortable and really enjoyed walking along the streets of Hanoi (especially when you finally know how to cross the streets safely haha).
I like to think back to how we went on excursions with the other program participants, ate Vietnamese street food, and ended the day with Vietnamese beer. Still, for me personally, the most beautiful moment must have been the one in which I realized that I can feel at home anywhere in the world.
Would you recommend the program to others?
I am very happy to have participated in a Joint ISU and can only recommend it to others. In a short time, I met such great people, attended an exciting academic program, and definitely broadened my horizon. Finally, I would like to say that my participation in ISU Vietnam was one of the biggest highlights of my studies and I am glad that I could be part of it.
"I believe that ISU Vietnam has contributed a lot to my personal development. In a very short time, I was able to get to know so many new people and encounter a different culture and a city unknown to me. These are priceless experiences full of memories that I will remember for a long time."
