Emerging Fields: All Systems Go
The new Emerging Fields funding programme, the second pillar of the Austrian excellence initiative excellent=austria, is set to launch. For the first time, teams from all areas of basic research are invited to tackle entirely new research ideas and break free of established approaches. The programme focuses particularly on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary projects, as well as arts-based research. Up to € 6 million euros in FWF funding is available to the individual teams; the call for proposals runs until 1 February 2023. More information

Challenges and Potentials for Europe: "Intergenerational Futures" (Volkswagenstiftung) (Deadline: 14 December 2022)
The call targets scholars in the humanities, social and cultural sciences, as these fields are often still missing in research on demographic change. Where appropriate, interdisciplinary co-operations with partners from the life, data, technological and natural sciences are appreciated. Funding can be provided for the constitution of European research groups comprising up to five principal investigators (PIs) from at least three different European countries. More Information

Emerging Fields (FWF) (Deadline: 01 February 2023)
The programme is for teams of excellent researchers who are engaged in cooperative pioneering work in basic research and who are prepared to break with established ways of thinking. The aim of the programme is to implement innovative, original, or high-risk research ideas that have the potential to transform a field of research or trigger a paradigm shift in one discipline or across several.More information

Cooperation Development Research (Deadline: 30 November 2022)
With the programme Cooperation Development Research – CDR (Kooperation Entwicklungsforschung – KoEF) the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) has created an instrument to foster research on the two main principles of excellency and cooperation in development research. It aims to support application-oriented cooperation projects between Austrian higher education institutions/research institutions and institutions in countries of the Global South and therewith to contribute to analysing and solving local challenges and to achieving the SDGs adopted by the United Nations in 2015. DOC team (ÖAW) (Deadline: 31 October 2022)
With the DOC-team funding programme, the Austrian Academy of Sciences puts together teams of 3 to 4 doctoral candidates from the humanities and the social and cultural sciences to develop interdisciplinary solutions to problems. Involvement of doctoral candidates from the fields of the natural sciences, medicine or technology is desirable. More information

International Communication (ÖFG) (next deadline: 06 November 2022)
The research funding scheme “International Communication” of the Austrian Research Association represents an addition to the financial support options of the universities and other project funding institutions. This research funding scheme provides funding for trips abroad and will give guest researchers the opportunity to come to Austria. The funding is aimed at junior researchers demonstrating academic excellence, who have been unable to receive sufficient funding from other institutions either on formal grounds or due to a shortage of resources. 3rd Africa-UniNet call (OEAD) (Deadline: 30 November 2022)
The 3rd Africa-UniNet call will be open from from 1 September 2022 - 30 November 2022. Only active Africa-UniNet member institutions (WU is one of them) are eligible to apply. More Information

Austrian Climate Research Programme 2023 (Klima- und Energiefonds) (Deadline: 26 January 2023)
Within the framework of the Climate and Energy Fund, the Austrian Climate Research Programme (ACRP) provides a conceptual and institutional basis for supporting climate research in Austria. The ACRP focuses on research on climate change and climate actions, adaptation, mitigation and their mutual interrelation. More Information

The Houska Prize (Deadline: 30 November 2022)
Established in 2005, the B&C Private Foundation’s Houska Prize was set up to promote business-related research and innovation. The Austrian research Oscars will be marking its 18th iteration with a new development: the 2023 Houska Prize will be extended to include a third category – Non-University Research – which will complement the existing categories Higher Education Research and Research & Development in SMEs. As a result, the B&C Private Foundation will be increasing the overall prize fund to EUR 750,000. The top prize for each category is EUR 150,000. More information

Bonus to cover caretaking costs during business travel
WU has launched an initiative to provide additional support to our researchers with caretaking responsibilities. Researchers should not have to limit their international network building activities, which are such a key factor for academic success, because of caretaking responsibilities. Caretaking responsibilities include not only childcare, but also the care of spouses or partners in need of constant care or the care of elderly parents or grandparents. More Information

    Jean Monnet Fellowships - Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (Deadline: 25 October 2022)
    The fellowships are open to candidates who have obtained their doctorate more than 5 years prior to the start of the fellowship on 1 September (to apply for 2023-24, the Ph.D. should have been awarded before 1 September 2018). Candidates of all nationalities are eligible for the Jean Monnet Fellowships. More Information

    The OeAW awards up to eight fellowships per year to holders of a doctorate or PhD in the humanities and social and cultural sciences in order to assist in the transition to the post-doc phase. More Information
