Starting March 2023: FWF Switches Administration of Stand-Alone Projects to PROFI
Since 2019, the FWF has been gradually switching the administration of its funding programs to the new PROFI mode. This change is intended to make the funding process easier for researchers and their institutions while ensuring autonomy in the application process. The administration of Stand-Alone Projects will switch over to PROFI starting March 20, 2023. More information
FWF: FWF Open-Access Block Grant Starting in 2024
Since 2019, the FWF has been gradually switching the administration of its funding programs to the new PROFI mode. Starting in 2024, the FWF will be providing a new instrument to support open-access publishing: the FWF open-access block grant. More information
FWF - Call for applications: Members of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) Board for the functional period 2023-2026
The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) is seeking members of the FWF Board for the functional period 2023-2026 by June 4, 2023. The FWF therefore invites scientists to apply as members for the upcoming functional period. Speakers or alternates are sought for 32 scientific fields. More information (only in German)
Current FFG projects: Above-average inflation
According to the FFG cost guidelines, hourly rates are to be calculated using the annual wage account for the last completed calendar year. However, since the jump in inflation between 2022 and 2023 was above average, the hourly rates from 2023 can be used for reporting periods ending in 2023. However, the hourly rate from 2023 may only be used for hours from this year.
ENGAGE.EU: Research Collaboration Platform
ENGAGE.EU is launching the new Research Collaboration Platform that will faciliate collaboration and networking among researchers of the nine partner universities, as well as sharing inspiring articles, events and news.

ERC Advanced Grant
The call is open to all topics and disciplines and is aimed at top researchers who want to break new ground in their research (deadline 23 May 2023).

MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships
This call of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions encourages researchers holding a PhD who wish to acquire new skills through advanced training, international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral mobility (deadline 13 September 2023).
The thematically open programme funds interdisciplinary research networks. COST Actions cover the expenses of networking activities rather than research and as such is used to organise and fund scientific events, reimburse travel expenses for scientific purposes, and promote publications. FWF - WEAVE
FWF has established together with eleven other European research funding organisations network for the purpose of funding cross-border research projects. As part of the “Weave” initiative, researchers from two or three countries can carry out closely integrated, joint research projects. Proposals will be processed according to the lead agency procedure, meaning that only one of the participating funding organisations is responsible for reviewing the proposal and making a funding recommendation, while the funding is done separately by each respective national funding organisation. Netidee SCIENCE (FWF) (deadline: 10 April 2023)
The objective behind netidee SCIENCE funding is to support independent basic research on the opportunities and challenges presented by the internet and related innovations at Austria's universities and non-university research institutions. Funding is provided for forward-looking research projects that advance scientific knowledge about the internet, its underlying technologies and methods, and the resulting social aspects. Data:Research:Austria (ÖAW) (deadline short proposal: 02 May 2023)
The new programme of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) financed by the Fonds Zukunft Österreich serves to promote data-based research (microdata research) in Austria. Funding is intended for projects at Austrian research institutions that develop existing data (from surveys, exhaustive surveys, registers, panels of official statistics, administrative data, etc.) for enhanced empirical-quantitative applications and questions in the field of socio-scientific research; preferably AMDC data sets, and also useable related data sets, in particular those of the Austrian Social Science Data Archive (AUSSDA) and other institutions (ASEP, EOSC, …). The budget for each of the projects is between a minimum of EUR 150,000 and a maximum of EUR 350,000. More information
International Communication (ÖFG) (next deadline: 11 June 2023)
The research funding scheme “International Communication” of the Austrian Research Association represents an addition to the financial support options of the universities and other project funding institutions. This research funding scheme provides funding for trips abroad and will give guest researchers the opportunity to come to Austria. The funding is aimed at junior researchers demonstrating academic excellence, who have been unable to receive sufficient funding from other institutions either on formal grounds or due to a shortage of resources. Bonus to cover caretaking costs during business travel
WU has launched an initiative to provide additional support to our researchers with caretaking responsibilities. Researchers should not have to limit their international network building activities, which are such a key factor for academic success, because of caretaking responsibilities. Caretaking responsibilities include not only childcare, but also the care of spouses or partners in need of constant care or the care of elderly parents or grandparents. More Information
WU Anniversary Fund of the City of Vienna (Deadline: 25 April 2023)
Funding area: WU projects that serve to improve Vienna’s international competitiveness as a cultural, scientific, and economic center and that are expected to strengthen the cooperation between economic sciences and the business community in Vienna. More information
WU Projects (Deadline: 13 June 2023)
Generating publishable research findings through an independently conducted project. WU Projects are intended to fill the niche not covered by the calls for applications issued by the major national funding bodies (OeNB and FWF). WU Projects should lead to further third party-funded projects. More information
Post-doc Research Contracts (Deadline: 13 June 2023)
Post-Doc Research Contracts are intended to support WU’s outstanding post-doc level researchers in their research efforts. The goal of these contracts, in the form of a sabbatical or semester-long leave of absence, is to strengthen the grant recipient’s academic career by giving them more time for their actual research work and to help researchers create and strengthen international networks. Research Contracts for Senior Researchers (Deadline: 13 June 2023)
Research contracts are intended to support outstanding WU researchers in their research efforts and release them from their teaching obligations. They are a type of sabbatical or research leave. More information
Dr. Maria Schaumayer Habilitation Grant (Deadline: 31.05.2023)
The Dr. Maria Schaumayer Habilitation Grant is funded by the Austrian National Bank OeNB and is aimed at women in assistant professor positions at WU. The grant is intended to support women researchers in the social and economic sciences by releasing them from general teaching and administrative duties and allowing them to work on their habilitation projects as freely as possible and without interruption. ENGAGE.EU: Junior Fellowship Program (University of Toulouse)
This call for projects is aimed at junior researchers, who want to move to Toulouse and who have up to three years experience after their PhD. The net salary is fixed between 3000 – 3500 euros (net) per month. An annual budget for professional travel and laboratory running costs may be requested. More Information
FFG Academy – the FFG offers training sessions for prospective and successful applicants. The course Application in Horizon Europe (13.-14.06.2023) is primarily focused on collaborative projects.
