Sven Modell is visiting the Institute for Organization Studies

12/10/2022

We are happy to welcome Sven Modell at the Institute for Organization Studies from 17 to 19 October.

Sven Modell is Professor of Management Accounting at the Alliance Manchester Business School in the UK. Prior to joining the School in 2007, he held a Chair in Accounting at Stockholm University School of Business, Sweden. He also holds Visiting Professorships at the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH), Norway, and Turku School of Economics, Finland. Sven Modell currently serves as Editor of Management Accounting Research and Associate Editor of Accounting and Business Research and European Accounting Review and is member of the editorial boards of four other, leading accounting journals. In addition, he is an Editor of the European Accounting Association's PhD Mentoring Initiative.

In the course of his visit, Sven Modell will be involved in two sessions in the Research Seminar of the Department of Management. First, he will be giving a Research Presentation on “Accounting, Calculative Infrastructures and Commensuration Work”. In the presentation, he will explore how commensuration work unfolds in relation to a broader assemblage of calculative infrastructures, looking at the example of a Swedish central government agency. The findings of the research underline the importance of adopting a multi-layered view of commensuration work, which entails both direct and indirect forms of reactivity.

Second, he will be running a PhD Workshop entitled “On the virtues and vices of combining theories: The case of institutional and actor-network theories”. This session will be examining the possibilities and challenges of combining method theories in research through an analysis of studies, which combine insights from institutional theory (IT) and actor-network-theory (ANT).
