Executive Summary

Optical communications, optical Internet, and information processing need switches for redirecting the information flow in different glass fiber channels. The worldwide need of these devices is predicted to grow enormously within the next five years. To date a large variety of optical switches have been developed. Magnetooptical switches combine a comparatively short switching time (below 100 ns in our case) and low insertion loss with the latching type of operation (i.e. they consume energy only during the switching proc-ess). 

Im Wintersemester 2002/03 wurde im PS Idea Generation bereits ein Business Proposal für den magnetooptischen Schalter erstellt. Aufgrund einer eindeutigen Go-Entscheidung soll die Marktanalyse vertieft und der Ressourcen- und Umsetzungsaspekt für eine kom-merzielle Nutzung ausgearbeitet werden.
