e-card

If you have statutory insurance, your Austrian social insurance provider will issue a so-called e-card, which you must take with you whenever you visit a doctor or go for treatment at a healthcare facility. WU Employees are insured with the Versicherungsanstalt öffentlich Bediensteter, Eisenbahnen und Bergbau (BVAEB; website in German).

If you take out private insurance, you should contact your insurance provider before seeking medical treatment to ensure coverage.

Doctors and General Practitioners

Your first point of contact will usually be a general practitioner (Praktischer Arzt). If necessary, the doctor will then refer you to a specialist (Facharzt) or a hospital. It is recommended to arrange an appointment in advance. If necessary, some general practitioners also make house calls.

Pharmacies

Pharmacies are usually open Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 6:00pm, and from 8:00am to 12:00am on Saturdays. Some are also open Saturday afternoon.

You usually have to arrange an appointment in advance to see a dentist.

Hospitals
Emergency Care – Late-Night and Weekend Services

In case of an acute medical problem or emergency, help is available in one of Vienna’s hospitals.

The Vienna General Hospital, Allgemeines Krankenhaus Wien (AKH Wien),is centrally located in the 9th district and is available 24 hours a day in case of an emergency.
