Quality of life of the elderly in Viennese day care centres

A qualitative analysis

Many assumptions and hopes are tied to day care centres. However, evidence – particularly –on their contribution to improve their guests’ quality of life is rare. Past research found that day care centres help preventing both depression and social isolation. (Qualitative) comprehensive approaches to investigate the various aspects of social care related quality of life are still lacking.

We initiated a pilot project which aimed at identifying (i) the domains of elderly’s quality of life that are influenced by day care centres and (ii) the areas for improvements towards a more needs-based care and assistance. For this purpose qualitative research methods (in this case qualitative interviews and focus group discussions) were applied.
