Short Biography

Hans Robert Hansen is professor emeritus of management and information systems at WU. He is one of the trailblazers of the IS discipline and of strategic management at universities.

He has over 40 years of experience in management, teaching, research, and consulting. He started his career as assistant professor at Wuerzburg University, worked several years for IBM Germany, and became full professor of business administration, with a focus on information systems at Duisburg University in 1974. Four years later he accepted an offer of the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration (Wirtschaftsuniversitaet Wien; WU). He is the founder and was more than 30 years chair of the Institute for Management Information Systems at WU. In addition he served as head of the University Computing Centre (1978–1986) and as WU rector (1987-1991, 1998-2002).

His IS research interests focus on IS strategies, concepts, methods and tools in Marketing and Retailing. Since the mid nineties he and his team developed industry oriented reference models for electronic commerce. At present, the research activities concentrate on business models, IS architectures, and tools for internet-based consumer information systems (B2C).

He has published dozens of articles and books on these topics. His “Wirtschafts-informatik” textbook is the IS book bestseller in German speaking countries (more than 500.000 copies sold).

He spent sabbatical semesters as Visiting Research Fellow at the Business Schools of New York University, University of California in Berkeley, and the University of Technology in Sydney.

At present, Hans Robert Hansen lives in Posada, Sardinia from May to September, and in Vienna, Austria from October to April.
