The Institute for Economic Geography and GIScience (WGI) was established with two interconnected missions to strive for international excellence:
It is worthwhile to stress how distinctly 'untraditional', within academia, are the quintessential features of the Institute. In what might — until recently perhaps — have been described as traditional academia, the core values have been those of highly individualised scholarship, and of the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake, within professionally constructed disciplinary boundaries. These have never been the values exposed within the Institute which has always displayed a strong commitment to working across disciplinary boundaries, and to the collaborative production of knowledge, both with colleagues in the university and beyond it.
