1898: Founding of WU Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien
(at that time still called Imperial and Royal Export Academy).
Advertising was not yet a topic of research interest at institutions of
higher education.
1910: Viktor Mataja
(1857-1934) publishes “Die Reklame”, a classic textbook on advertising
which made Mataja the pioneer of advertising in the German-speaking
world. Advertising stamps were a popular advertising medium of the
period, and have since fallen into oblivion. Here you can find the
Institute for Advertising and Marketing Research‟s one-of-a-kind collection of historical advertising stamps.
1955: Establishment of the Chair of Advertising and Marketing under professor
Dr. Karl Skowronnek (1902-1976) at the former University of World
Trade. At the same time, the Austrian Advertising Research Association was founded, which dedicates itself to the exchange of ideas between the business world and academia. The University Study Program in Advertising and Sales opened its doors in 1949 to welcome graduates and professionals seeking continuing education in the this field.
1974: Dr. Günter Schweiger is appointed full professor and head of the
advertising and marketing division. Dr. Schweiger also serves as
president of the Austrian Advertising Research Association and
scientific head of the University Study Program in Advertising and
Sales.
1983: The University of World Trade
becomes WU-Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien (Vienna University of Economics
and Business). Since then, the Vienna Chair for Advertising and
Marketing Research has made a name for itself in research and teaching.
To the Chair, it has always been a matter of utmost concern to offer
progressive, practice-oriented programs, a goal also reflected in the
many projects which have been successfully conducted to date.
1989: Establishment of the Römerquelle Visiting Professorship
1996: Founding of the training advertising agency together with Tibor Barci
1997: Launch of the Institute for Advertising and Marketing Research's first website
2005: The Chair for Advertising and Marketing Research celebrates its 50th
anniversary. Due to changes in university structure, the division
becomes the Institute for Advertising and Marketing Research.
2009: After 35 years of service Prof. Günter Schweiger retires as per September 30, 2009. Prof. Mayhofer temporarily leads the Institute for Advertising and Marketing Research.
From
the beginning, the Chair has been actively involved in and has heavily
