Mission Statement

The Institute for Fiscal and Monetary Policy is an economics institute dealing mainly with economic policy, macroeconomics and financial sciences. The Institute is integrated in numerous research areas, particularly in the areas of European economic growth and labor policy and international tax coordination. Economic policy in Europe has changed dramatically over the past 20 years as a result of European integration, making this also one of the most important focal points of our research.

Internationally recognized research in these fields is one of the Institute’s main priorities, as demonstrated by the numerous books and papers in national and international journals as well as research cooperations in Austria and abroad. [link FIDES list of publications] Distinctions and awards received by Institute faculty members include the Egon Matzner Award, the Young Economist Award, the Heinz Kienzl Award and the FESTO Fellowship.

Research is becoming increasingly complex and interdisciplinary cooperation is more important than ever. The Institute works together with renowned economic facilities both on the national and international level. A look at the international mix of past and present faculty, staff and students confirms this intensive cooperation.

Research and teaching form an integral part of the Institute’s activities. Since a majority of students graduating from the WU obtain employment at large private or public institutions, we consider it of vital importance to familiarize them with theoretical, empirical and institutional knowledge about Austrian and European economic policy. It is very important to us to work closely together with our students. Therefore we seek to guarantee expert supervision for students working on their master’s theses or doctoral dissertations, and strongly advocate students’ integration into all research projects conducted at the Institute. Our ultimate goal is to increase cooperation between academia, the business community and the public sector.

The Institute offers numerous introductory courses in economics and courses from all the Institute’s main research areas. The close cooperation with national research institutes and the interdisciplinary orientation of our Institute is also reflected in the amount of courses offered and in their diversity (see list of current courses)
