Legal provisions

Recognition of examinations is regulated under § 78 (1) of the Universities Act (Universitätsgesetz) 2002 as amended. The following requirements for recognition apply:

  • Examinations submitted for recognition must have been successfully completed at one of the following types of educational institutions:

    • recognized domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institutions
    • higher vocational schools
    • schools for the training of teachers and non-teaching supervisory staff
    • recognized domestic educational institutions for which an admission requirement is the general university entrance qualification
    • university-level courses
  • The applicant must be enrolled in a regular degree program

  • The examinations submitted for recognition must be equivalent to the examinations prescribed in the program curriculum.

The Universities Act 2002 as amended does not provide for the recognition of bachelor theses. The deadline for submission of applications for the recognition of academic theses was December, 2010.

PLEASE NOTE: When examinations have been recognized and no further legal remedy can be applied (right to appeal waived, appeal period expired), the examinations can no longer be deleted from the record! Previously recognized examinations can be exchanged for other exams only under certain specific conditions. For more information, please consult the FAQs.
