The teaching and research activities at the Institute for the Environment and Regional Development concentrate mainly on regional and environmental aspects of economic development.

Topics include:

  • Urban and regional development
  • Business location and globalization
  • Real estate economics
  • Development research
  • Environmental economics and sustainable development
  • Industrial clusters and competitiveness
  • Innovation, the knowledge society and space

These topics have become particularly important in light of developments at a global (e.g. new developing regions in Asia, the Kyoto Protocol) and European level (e.g. transformation of CEE countries, European research area). The Institute works closely with numerous international networks and is an important member of the scientific community in the field of regional and environmental economics, and is committed to upholding the high standards of this community. The Institute believes in an interdisciplinary approach to practical and theoretical questions. Research concentrates primarily on socio-economic processes closely related to location issues (e.g. clusters, regional integration, multi-level governance, etc.). Particular emphasis is placed on providing future managers, scientists and policy makers with the tools to recognize the most important contributing factors leading to dynamic corporate structures and attractive, sustainable communities and regions.
