Application and selection process:
- When can I apply for the program?
Applications can only be submitted during the online application period.

- What if I don't have the results of GMAT/GPA and the proof of English proficiency at the time of application?
We can only accept complete applications. You have to have the results at the time of application, otherwise we will not accept your application for the program.
- Is it possible to submit my application before the application period in order to receive a pre-evaluation?
Due to the high number of applications WU is not able to assess any documents before the admission period.
- What is the GMAT Test?

- Do I have to take the GMAT Test?
WU strongly recommends that all students submit a valid GMAT score. Applicants from Austria, the EU or the EEC can also submit their weighted grade point average from all exams relevant to admission to the CEMS MIM program instead of the GMAT score. Transcripts and other documents must be certified by the applicant’s former university or educational institution. WU students can apply for confirmation in the Examinations Office (Section B, Upper Level 2). Please note: The GMAT Score must be available at the time of application! Any documents issued in a language other than German or English must be accompanied by a certified translation!
- If I have to take the GMAT Test, which is the minimum score I have to achieve?
WU does not apply strict cut-off criteria for admission. As a point of reference, the average score in 2010 was 650, and candidates with a score of less than 600 are unlikely to be invited to an interview.
- What is the GMAT Code for the application to the MIM/CEMS at WU?

- What minimum weighted grade point average is required for acceptance to the program?
We cannot provide a general answer here. The required minimum score depends on a number of factors, such as other applicants’ academic performance.
- How is the weighted grade point average calculated?
It is to be calculated by the university from which you received your bachelor degree. We do not have any recommondations regarding the calculations for your university.
- Do I have to choose English as my first foreign language? How can I prove my proficiency in English?
Yes, all non-native English speakers must take English as their first foreign language in the CEMS program. The following certificates are acceptable as proof of your English proficiency for the application process:
-TOEFL 600/250/100 or better [validity: two years]
-IELTS 7.0 or better [validity: two years]
-Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
-BEC Higher
-Certificates of language exams taken at WU in English Business Communication worth at least 14 ECTS and with a grade point average better than 2.5
-Bachelors Degree entirely taught in English
- What are the requirements regarding the level of the second language?
In order to complete the courses in your second language at a level acceptable under CEMS guidelines, you should ideally start the program at a general language level for that second language of no less than B1 (written) and B2 (spoken).
- How can I prove my proficiency in the second foreign language required for CEMS?
Please hand in the proof of highest language level attained in the second language. Eg: A levels, university courses.
- How do I proceed if English is my native language?
Native English speakers must declare two foreign languages on their application.
- Can I apply if I will not complete my bachelor (or other first-degree) program until just before the first semester begins?
Yes, you may apply since proof of completion of a first-degree program (your bachelor program) is not required until actual enrollment. However, please note that it is NOT possible to start the CEMS MIM in fall 2011 without having obtained a relevant first degree by enrollment in August 2011.
- What are the minimum educational requirements to be eligible to apply for the CEMS MIM?
You must have completed a bachelor of science or other first-degree program in a field relevant to the CEMS MIM program and equivalent to at least 180 ECTS credits. (Please note that you can also apply if you will complete your first-degree program later in 2011 but BEFORE actual enrollment for the CEMS MIM.) At least 60 ECTS from your relevant first-degree program must have been obtained in the field of business administration.
- What are courses in the field of Business Administration?
Business Administration: eg Finance, Marketing, HR Management
Not Business Administration: Languages, Law, Statistics, Economics
- Can I also start the CEMS MIM in the summer term?
No. The CEMS MIM starts only in the fall.
- Can I choose the date of my selection interview?
No, the university will schedule the date for your selection interview.
- How many students will be accepted into the program?
80 students will be accepted for fall 2011/2012.
- How many students apply for the program?
We are expecting approximately 400 applications.
- When will I receive notification of acceptance /refusal to the program?
Applicants are notified by the middle of December and the middle of April. To accept a place in the program, applicants must confirm the admission offer in writing within 10 days of receipt. Any offers not confirmed within 10 days will be withdrawn and offered to the next candidate on the waiting list. This process will be repeated until all available openings are filled.
- Will students coming from “Fachhochschulen” be at a disadvantage relative to applicants with a bachelor degree from a university?
No. Every application that fulfils the formal application criteria will be assessed equally and without bias.
- What is the selection interview like?
The selection interview lasts approximately 45 minutes and is held in English, although your second CEMS language might also be examined briefly. Representatives from the CEMS Corporate Partners, the CEMS Faculty and the WU CEMS Office will be present, as well as 3-5 applicants. Applicants are required to work out a case study one hour before their actual interview time.
- I do not yet have the necessary 60 ECTS from the field of business administration, but I will by June/the end of next semester. By this time, I will also have completed my entire degree program and graduated. Can I apply?
Prospective students must earn 60 ECTS credits by passing exams in the field of business administration. You do not need to provide proof of all 60 ECTS at the time of application, but your transcript does need to reflect that you will have completed at least 60 ECTS in business administration over the course of your bachelor program.
Admission
- What level of language skills do I need to be able to spend my exchange semester at one of the CEMS host schools in Belgium, France, Italy or Spain?
You must make sure that you are able to understand the coursework, give presentations, actively contribute to class discussions and complete homework and written or oral exams in that language.
- Do I have to pay CEMS tuition fees?

- Which academic title will I receive after completing the program?
You will be awarded a double degree: the correct academic titles are MSc (WU) and CEMS MIM.
- Do documents need to have been legalized by the time I apply or can I hand them in at a later date?
Yes, documents must have been legalized when you submit your application. As legalization might take a while, depending on your country and the authorities in question, please plan ahead accordingly!
- Is there a guarantee that I can spend my exchange semester at LSE, HEC etc.?
No, we cannot guarantee you a place at your preferred university, but you will be able to submit your preferences during the application process.
Online Application Tool
- Which documents should be uploaded?
Your CV is comprised of the information you provide in the online application. All the relevant documentation should therefore be uploaded online. Printed documents sent by mail will not be accepted.
- Which courses should I list in the “Prerequisites Section”?
You should list all courses in the field of business administration that you have already completed or will complete by the end of your program. They must add up to a total of 60 ECTS.
- Do courses in economics or business law qualify as “related to business administration”?
No. Only classes in the fields of management and business administration qualify.
- The university where I obtained my first level degree did not use the ECTS course credit system. How do I prove that I have at least the necessary 60 ECTS in business administration? What should I enter in the online application tool?
Please ask your home university to issue your grade transcript showing the equivalent ECTS credits for all your courses. In the meantime, you can enter the credits as shown on your transcript from your home university into the online application tool.
If your university does not use the ECTS system, please enter the credits, that your university is using.
- Why does information sometimes disappear?
Please do NOT forget: You must ALWAYS click the save button for every page, otherwise the information you have entered will be deleted when you try to send it!
General Questions
- Who should I contact about general questions concerning the CEMS MIM?
For answers to general questions, please send an email to cems@wu.ac.at . Please look at the cems@WU websites and the FAQs before contacting us though, since the answers to most questions can be found there .
- Is there an age limit for the CEMS MIM program?
No, there is no age limit.
- My undergraduate degree is not from a business-related program, but from a different area (like media and communication, for example). Can I apply to CEMS?
In order to be eligible to apply for the CEMS MIM program, you must have obtained at least 60 ECTS in the field of business administration. You cannot apply if you have not completed these credits. See: http://www.wu-wien.ac.at/lehre/studienangebotaktuell/master/cems/zul
- I am not from Austria or the EU. Can I apply?
YES! The CEMS program is known for its strong international orientation. Applications from outside Austria or the EU are therefore explicitly encouraged!
- German is not my native language. Can I choose it as my second CEMS foreign language?
Students whose native language is not German can select German as their second CEMS language.
- I am neither from Austria nor the EU, but I obtained my undergraduate degree from a university within the European Union. Do I need to take the GMAT?
WU strongly recommends that all students submit a valid GMAT score. You can also submit your weighted grade point average from all exams relevant to admission to the CEMS MIM program instead of a GMAT score. Transcripts and documents must be certified by the applicant’s former university or educational institution.
- Do I need to take the TOEFL if I spent my exchange semester in an English-speaking country or if I did part of my studies in English (one of my majors, for example)?
Having completed part of your studies in English or an exchange semester abroad is not sufficient proof of English language proficiency. Unless you have completed the four WU English Business Communication courses with a grade point average better than 2.5, you do have to take the TOEFL test (or provide one of the other accepted certificates).
- Where can I find detailed course descriptions?
A general overview of courses offered is provided in the CEMS brochure included in our download section. Course content and schedules, however, are subject to change from one semester to the next. We cannot therefore provide very detailed course descriptions far in advance.
- I have substantial practical experience in the field of business administration. Can I substitute this experience for part of the required 60 ECTS?
No. We can only accept academic credits, not practical experience.

- Who should I contact if I have specific questions about CEMS courses?

- When are CEMS examinations held?
Examinations are generally held at the end of each semester (i.e. in January and June). Since exceptions for some courses (like block lectures, for example) cannot be ruled out, please always consult the course calendar (http://vvz.wu-wien.ac.at) or your lecturer for specific examination dates.
