Project Objectives

• Analyzing the consideration of sustainability concepts in different project management and management approaches

• Analyzing the relationships between the application of sustainability principles in companies and in projects

• Considering sustainability principles in the project assignment process and in the project management process

• Developing methods for considering sustainability principles in the project assignment process and in the project management process

• Analyzing the challenges and potentials from the consideration of sustainability principles  in the project assignment process and in the project management process

Sustainable Project Assignment

• The temporary character of projects contradicts the long term-orientation of sustainability. Projects initialize investments and by that contribute to realize long term-investment objectives.

• Sustainability principles are of relevance in the project assignment process when analyzing the investment and defining the project.

• Stakeholders contribute to the project assignment process.

Sustainable Project Management

• Sustainability is of relevance in designing the project management process.

• The different sustainability principles are of different relevance for the different objects of consideration of project management.

• Because of the characteristics of projects (being risky, relatively unique, socially complex, dynamic) sustainability principles are implicitly considered in project risk management, project stakeholder analysis, business case analysis, etc.

• In the definition of project objectives economic, ecologic and social aspects are of relevance. This leads to an internalization of external effects.

• Elements for the organizational design of projects, such as empowerment, integration, and partnering, consider sustainability principles.

• The consideration of sustainability principles leads to more complex decision and communication structures in projects. The role of the project owner becomes even more important.
