Management Approaches

processRGC
A process is a defined sequence of tasks performed by several roles from one or more organizations. Elements of a process are tasks, relationships between the tasks and responsibilities for the performance of the tasks.

Functions of macro-process management are identifying processes, structuring the process portfolio (e.g. in a process map), and defining process managers. Micro-process management functions are describing and controlling single processes.

projectRGC
A project is a temporary organization for the performance of a relatively unique process of medium or large scope (3-12 months, minimum 200 person days, medium to high strategic importance).

Project management is a process including the sub processes project starting, project coordinating, project controlling, resolving of a project discontinuity, and project closing-down. In project management the objectives, scope, schedule, costs, income, organization, and the culture of a project as well as project context dimensions (e.g. relevant social environments, business case) are to be considered.

A programme is a temporary organization for the performance of a unique process of large scope. The projects of a programme are closely coupled by common overall objectives, strategies and processes.

companyRGC
A project-oriented company defines “Management by Projects” as a strategy, applies projects and programmes as temporary organizations, and manages a portfolio of different project types. It has specific integrative organizations, such as a PM Office and a Project Portfolio Group, and applies a “New Management Paradigm”.

The maturity of a project oriented-company can be analyzed by “company mature RGC”.

changeRGC
A change is a unique, mid term process, which relates to several dimensions (services, markets, organization structure, personnel, infrastructure, financing) of an organization. It results in a new identity of the organization and is sustaining. Second order change types are “radical new positioning” and “transforming”.

Change management is the management of a change process. Projects and programmes can be applied for structuring a change process. Projects are not relevant for the change process overall, but rather for phases of a change process.
