General information

All data saved on any of WU’s servers (mail server etc.) maintained by IT Services is automatically backed up on a central backup system once a day.

Technical information

WU’s TSM server has a central tape autoloader, which automatically transfers the oldest data onto magnetic tape, and restores it from back-up if necessary. Restoring secured data is completely automated and is possible at any time of the day or night.

Using TSM

If you wish to save data from a client PC or a server not managed by WU on the central backup system, send an email to tsm-admin@wu.ac.at. Please include the following information:

1. name or IP address of the computer from which you wish to save data on TSM

2. personal contact information for that computer

3. operating system

4. quantity of data you wish to save

5. password you wish to use for the TSM node

Then you must install a TSM client. The TSM client is available for a large number of platforms. You can find a HTML installation guide on IBM’s website for TSM. You can download clients (current version 5.5) from our FTP server.
