Wireless LAN at WU

To access WLAN at WU, you will need a notebook with a wireless Ethernet adapter and an operating system with network software, configured for DHCP. Currently supported standards are IEEE 802.11 a/b/g and n.

Network password

You will need to set a network password in the » Control Panel to activate WLAN service.

Instructions on setting your password can be found here » Setting a network password.

WLAN access points locations

WLAN service at WU is constantly being expanded. To help you find an access point, we have compiled an overview of » WLAN coverage (in German) in all the buildings of the WU campus.

Configuration manuals

Three different network SSIDs are available at WU:

The SSID "wu-dot1x" is your general choice. Users with older notebooks can access the WU net using the SSID "wu", which uses VPN encryption.

The following configuration manuals are available from IT Services:

To configure the SSID "wu", please use the following manual:

Manuals for Windows Vista and Mac OS X can be found under » VPN access at WU.

802.1x vs. VPN access

The advantage of 802.1x technology is that login data (user name and password) only have to be entered once, i.e. during configuration. When you want to access WU’s WLAN again, your computer’s WLAN adapter will connect automatically.

If you are using an unencrypted connection, you will have only limited access to WU network services. Complete Internet access is only available after you have logged in with the Cisco VPN client under your user name and password.

Conferences at WU

Conference login IDs can be assigned to participants for the duration of conferences or meetings held at WU. Participants can use this login data to connect using a special "wu-conference" SSID.

Connect to the "wu-conference" network and open your Internet browser. You will automatically be redirected to an authentication page, where you can enter the login data (user name: conf####, conference password) provided by the conference organizers.

Please note: Access to the "wu-conference" is unencrypted. If you prefer encrypted access, please connect using the SSID "wu-dot1x" or the VPN client.

Important: You cannot log in to "wu-conference" using your PowerNet user name and password!

If you are planning an event at WU, please contact us ahead of time under postmaster@wu.ac.at with the necessary data (date and duration of the event, list of participants). We will send you further information by in-house mail.
