Using the internet on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers is becoming increasingly popular. Since these devices are very widely used by WU's current and prospective students, we have introduced mobile versions of WU's website, the BACH service and administrative system, and WU's Learn@WU eLearning platform, to provide a wide range of services tailored to students' needs.
To facilitate access to the information and services for the greatest number of students possible, we have developed platform-independent, browser-based mobile versions instead of platform-dependent applications. This ensures that the information structure is the same for both the desktop and mobile versions.
A top priority in designing the mobile version of WU's website was to allow for easy orientation and facilitate quick retrieval of relevant information. To this end, in the mobile version we have removed images from the site's content (wu.ac.at/start/en) and employ a reduced main navigation menu. Popular social media tools can be easily accessed from the homepage as well. To access the mobile version, please go to: http://m.wu.ac.at/start/en
Learn@WU's mobile version enables our students to have a more efficient, flexible and richer learning experience. They can check for upcoming dates and important deadlines, and have a look at the latest forum postings associated with a particular class from wherever they are, or view the most recent lecturecast while on the train. Learn@WU mobile allows fast and easy access to all Learn@WU pages; the platform's presentation and design have been adapted to the needs of users working and learning on smaller displays. Navigation is also facilitated by using intuitive icons and Learn@WU's signature color coding. To access the mobile version, please go to: https://learn.wu.ac.at
The new online phone directory, WU Directory, is available through WU's BACH university administration system (see info box). Aside from its overhauled presentation, which has been optimized for mobile devices, it introduces various changes, including improved usability, accessibility and open standards.
